HDD SOIL CONDITIONING

Paddle Reamer

The DRILLNOVA Paddle Reamer combines open-body cutting, soil mixing and drilling-fluid distribution for HDD bore enlargement in cohesive formations. Its paddle geometry creates working space around the tool, while application-matched carbide cutters and fluid ports help cut, condition and move reactive soil before product installation.

Application

HDD reaming, mixing and soil conditioning

Formation

Silty clay, muddy clay, loam and sandy clay

Cutting System

Replaceable carbide cutters

Size Range

12-40 in / approximately 305-1,016 mm

Product Overview & Application

Overview

The DRILLNOVA Paddle Reamer uses an open paddle arrangement to cut and mix cohesive soil while preserving space for drilling fluid and loosened material. Paddle layout, cutter grade and fluid distribution are selected for the formation, target diameter, rig capacity and planned reaming pass.

Welding and fabrication of a DRILLNOVA HDD paddle reamer

Active Soil Mixing

Open paddles cut and condition cohesive soil as the tool rotates through the bore.

Designed for Cohesive Ground

The configuration is intended for silty clay, muddy clay, loam, sandy clay and similar soil mixtures.

Buildup Control

Open flow areas and application-matched fluid distribution help manage sticky soil around the body.

Serviceable Carbide Cutters

Replaceable carbide cutters support inspection and maintenance when the supplied design permits replacement.

Body Configuration

Open paddle body designed to provide cutting, mixing and material-clearance space.

Paddle Layout

Number, angle and spacing are configured according to diameter and soil behaviour.

Cutting System

Replaceable carbide cutters; cutter grade and arrangement are selected by application.

Fluid Distribution

Fluid ports and flow paths can be positioned to support mixing and buildup control.

Body Construction

Welded steel structure manufactured to the approved product drawing.

Connection

Pin or box connection is selected to match the drill string and confirmed at order.

Reactive clay, variable fill and poor drilling-fluid return require careful review because they can increase buildup and torque. Competent rock, large cobbles and uncontrolled impact loading normally require a different reamer design or revised pass plan.

Product FAQ

What is a paddle reamer used for?

A paddle reamer enlarges an HDD bore while its open paddle geometry cuts, mixes and conditions cohesive soil before product installation.

Which formations are suitable?

It is primarily intended for silty clay, muddy clay, loam, sandy clay and similar cohesive soils. Competent rock or large cobbles require a different cutting structure.

What sizes are available?

The catalogue range is 12-40 in / approximately 305-1,016 mm. Custom configurations can be reviewed for the formation, bore plan and rig capacity.

How is a paddle reamer different from a fluted reamer?

A paddle reamer uses a more open structure for soil mixing and clearance. A fluted reamer uses a fuller tapered body with continuous helical channels. Ground behaviour and spoil return determine the better option.

How does the open body help control buildup?

Open space between the paddles provides room for conditioned soil and drilling fluid to move around the tool instead of collecting on a continuous body. Adequate fluid flow and returns are still essential.

Are the carbide cutters replaceable?

Replaceable carbide cutters can be supplied where the approved design permits. Confirm the exact cutter grade, retention method and replacement procedure for the selected model.

How is the connection selected?

Provide the exact drill-string connection, pin or box orientation, mating component and reference standard. DRILLNOVA will confirm the interface on the approved drawing.

What should be inspected after each run?

Inspect cutter wear or loss, paddle deformation, cracked welds, blocked fluid ports, shaft wear, body damage and the condition of the connection.

Can the paddle layout be customized?

Yes. Diameter, paddle number and angle, cutter arrangement, fluid ports, wear protection, connection and body length can be reviewed for the application.

Configure the Right Paddle Reamer

Share the target diameter, pilot-bore size, soil description, rig model, drill-string connection, drilling-fluid capacity and planned pass sequence. DRILLNOVA will review the application and confirm the recommended paddle and cutter configuration.
