ROLLER-CONE PILOT DRILLING TOOLING

Tricone Bit

DRILLNOVA Tricone Bits are designed for horizontal directional drilling through formations that require rolling cutting action. Milled-tooth and tungsten-carbide-insert configurations, sealed journal bearings and HDD-compatible API connections provide dependable pilot-hole drilling from soft clay and shale to abrasive, high-strength rock.

Product Overview & Application

Overview

The DRILLNOVA Tricone Bit uses three rotating cones to crush, chip and scrape the formation while maintaining steering response in an HDD pilot bore. TCI and milled-tooth options allow the cutting structure, bearing system and operating window to be matched to the ground.

DRILLNOVA tricone bit lineup for different HDD rigs and ground formations

Formation-Matched Cutting

Choose milled teeth for softer formations or TCI inserts for abrasive and higher-strength ground.

Balanced Three-Cone Action

Three intermeshing cones distribute cutting contact across the bore bottom for controlled rock breaking.

Sealed Journal Bearings

Rubber- and metal-sealed journal bearing options help protect the bearing system in demanding drilling conditions.

HDD Rig Compatibility

Common bit sizes and API REG connections are available for widely used HDD rock-drilling housings.

The WOB values above preserve the unit notation printed in the DRILLNOVA catalog. Confirm the permitted thrust/WOB, RPM, torque and fluid flow for the selected bit, housing and rig before operation. Reduce parameters when vibration, stalled cones, poor returns or abnormal torque are observed.

Product FAQ

What is a Tricone Bit used for in HDD?

It is used to drill the HDD pilot bore in formations where rolling cones and crushing or chipping action are more suitable than a fixed-cutter shearing structure.

What is the difference between TCI and milled-tooth bits?

TCI bits use tungsten-carbide inserts and are generally selected for more abrasive or higher-strength formations. Milled-tooth bits use machined steel teeth and are generally selected for softer formations.

How do I select the correct IADC code?

Selection depends on formation strength, abrasiveness, interbedding, expected run length, bearing/seal requirements and available drilling parameters. Provide ground information for technical review.

Which bit sizes are available?

The catalog lists 5.5, 6, 6.5, 7.875 and 8.5-inch sizes. Other diameters and connections should be confirmed as project-specific options.

Which connection should I choose?

The connection must match the rock housing and drill string. Common catalog configurations use 2-7/8 inch API REG for 5.5-inch bits and 3-1/2 inch API REG for 6- to 6.5-inch bits.

What should be checked after drilling?

Check free cone rotation, tooth or insert loss, cone shell wear, bearing play, seal condition, body erosion, blocked fluid outlets and thread damage.

Can the bit drill granite or basalt?

Selected TCI configurations may be used in granite, basalt and other high-strength rock. Confirm IADC code, insert geometry, abrasiveness, rig capability and operating parameters before selection.
